Campo de Gibraltar

The region of Campo de Gibraltar is a territory still unknown to many tourists who visit southern Spain. It is a part of Andalusia which belongs to the province of Cadiz. Given its geographical position located on the Strait of Gibraltar, it is bathed by two seas: The Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It was the settlement place for various civilizations in the past. It consists of seven municipalities hosting an entire cultural diversity available to its visitors.

The proximity of the sea is reflected in mild winters and hot summers. There is little rainfall which translates into days of sunshine during most part of the year. Getting up every morning and seeing a new sunny day does not only improve your mood but it also offers many possibilities for the practice of outdoor activities. People enjoy taking long walks by the seaside while breathing salty air.

Fishing and water related activities are some of the reasons why tourists prefer to visit the Campo de Gibraltar. Other popular activities are learning flamenco and visiting well known squares and museums. More and more amateurs join dance academies to learn how to dance sevillanas, to master the art of the fans and to play the castañuelas. Others prefer the practice of some sports like tennis and golf.

Tarifa town has hotels at the coast side and lodgings in interior areas. Rental apartments in Tarifa reach a high demand especially in the summer season. The city of Tarifa offers leisure activities and entertainment near the sea and the countryside. The beach lovers can enjoy white sandy beaches and practise windsurfing and kitesurfing. Lovers of the countryside have different hiking routes that cross rivers and hills.

San Roque is a luxurious town with a great infrastructure in hotels, community hall and restaurants. Casino of San Roque is a busy place for those who enjoy playing poker and other gambling activities. Speaking about San Roque involves talking about golf courses. The Valderrama golf club has magnificent facilities for the practice of this sport. If what you wish is to spend time with your family, visit the Pinar del Rey and the Roman ruins of Carteia.

Los Barrios is a very beautiful town in spring when vegetation becomes more colourful and exuberant. It has a strong industrial core in the area of Palmones. A place to visit is the Natural History Museum where you will enjoy a magnificent collection of fossils and butterflies. The reservoir called Charco Redondo supplies with drinking water to all municipalities in the region.

La Línea de la Concepción is one of the few cities that has the privilege to have two beaches: The beach at levante and the poniente one. Throughout its extensive seaside, important restaurants are located where you can taste a great variety of fish and seafood. The city has diverse cultural centres of public interest, such as the Bullfighting museum, the Cruz Herrera museum and Museum of the Isthmus.

Jimena de la Frontera is a quiet city occupied to farm and livestock. It receives a large influx of tourists when its famous fair in May starts. It is worth visiting the Arabic castle, the music festival which takes place annually and the cave paintings of the Laja Alta. Within the municipality of Jimena it is located the town of San Martín del Tesorillo, famous for its vast plantations of orange.

Castellar de la Frontera has huge estates and rural areas. Many farms are available for those who want to buy or rent. It is worth visiting the Castellar zoo and enjoying a beautiful demonstration of birds of prey. Another amenity is the Arabic Castellar castle. To stay in touch with nature it is highly recommended to go for a stroll by the Los Alcornocales Natural Park, a huge forest filled with oak and pine trees.

Algeciras is the municipality with the largest population. The fishing port is one of most important and biggest in the world. Important businesses are being located in Algeciras related to design and advertising. If you would like to learn how to dance belly dancing Algeciras offers you some specialized belly dance academies where you can learn it easily. The ferry from Algeciras has great demand throughout the year and allows the transfer of passengers to Ceuta and Morocco.

The cuisine of the Campo de Gibraltar is the most varied and delicious. Not only is it possible to taste great dishes from the sea such as prawns with garlic, clams a la marinera, seafood paella, sardinas al espeto (roasted sardines cooked with fire) or atun encebollado (tuna cooked with onions), but there is also a large choice of meats such as pork tenderloin, tail of bull or roasted quail. All this accompanied by a gazpacho mug and some Spanish omelette.

The character and behaviour of people is often extroverted. It is relatively easy to make friends and meet new people. The simple fact of asking for a street address can be a good reason to see the kindness and availability of people to help and give you a hand. Sometimes the mere act of walking the dog lets you find people doing the same activity willing to build a friendship.

Streets filled with pubs and clubs allow leisure and fun. Many foreigners are greatly surprised when contemplating a major move of people enjoying the nightlife, dancing and taking drinks past midnight. Usually this party atmosphere is not the usual way of living in their original homes. Going out for some drink is not restricted to weekends, but any day of the year.

Every day more and more companies look with nice eyes to the Campo de Gibraltar as a place to establish their businesses. This is evidenced by the growing industrial expansion that Palmones, in Los Barrios, is experiencing. La Linea de la Concepcion also shows a larger number of stores and small shops that have opened their doors recently. We hope that this trend will continue.
